Blog Rounds IV
posted in - Blog rounds, - Palmdoc |Welcome to the 4th edition of the MMR Blog rounds where we take you through some of the interesting Malaysian medical blog posts that we have come across.
While the MOH continues pushing through with it’s plans for TCM in Public Hospitals, you might be interested to read Shah’s blog about Alternative Medicine. Yet more instances of sad patient encounters with Alternative Medicine you see all the time but not highlighted enough in the Press:
Recently I encountered a child who was unwell for almost 2 weeks. Instead of bringing the child to the hospital, the parents brought the child to see a ‘bomoh’ who told them that the child’s condition was the work of spirits who had invaded him. He “treated” the child but his condition only became worse so they went to a different ‘bomoh’. The second ‘bomoh’ further strengthened their belief and also “treated” the child. The child was still not getting better so off they went to a different ‘bomoh’ where they were told that the spirits had already left the child. The poor child deteriorated further over the next few days. By the time he was brought to seek treatment at the hospital he had already suffered brain death from what was suspected to be meningitis
Palmo Anest does a fine post on Traditional/ Complementary Medicine in Public Hospital. Thanks for pointing out the TCM Division of MOH‘s website LT. Have added this to the MMR’s Government sector website links.
The next time you feel exasperated dealing with Pos Malaysia, take a look at how Letti coped with Uncle Sam’s Mailman. If we could only email parcels!!
Greenerpasture teaches a little Scot (Aberdeenian really) and he says “arfee nae weel” after United lost to Celtic
I recall how difficult it was getting accustomed to the Edinburgh accent during my Membership exams. I can imagine it’s far worse having to deal with Glaswegian and Aberdeenian!
If you think slaving away for the MOH and earning pittance is bad enough, wait til you read how Shah was Robbed of his salary. I hope Shah gets this mess sorted out soon. Don’t you hate all lazy inefficient pencil pushers!
No wonder more and more doctors are leaving goverment service. It’s not just the poor salary that makes people leave. What’s really frustrating is the bureaucracy involved and the inefficiency of the people we have to deal with who sit behind the desk all day and still can’t do their jobs properly. If the government is serious about wanting to retain doctors in government service it’s these little things that should be rectified.
Very sad but true! And you wonder why Government doctors are still resigning in droves? Pay is a pittance and then you get robbed by some idiot sitting in a Government office who can’t do his or her job right.
On to some actual CME on our blog rounds. Paces MRCP has a nice take and pix on a patient with Paget’s Disease. HOTM does a take on Cox2 and the heart – the story continues, and Homecysteine, Folic Acid and Vitamin B for the heart. Speaking of clincal trials, looking at Acronyms like WAFACS, VISP, HOPE-2, and NORVIT how does one keep up?!?!! Why we rely on the Internet of course, but it doesn’t always turn out the way we want as Jimbo points out
For some really gross pictures, you might want to head over to Hands’ post Colonoscopy in a patient with constipation – another fine pictorial quiz. Stumped? Here’s the answer.
Lastly a warning for those who indulge in Ecstasy pills. Raymond, our Triathlete Doc, blogs about a Wedding Tragedy.
The party ended around 11pm and I left almost immediately.Reached home around midnight, first call from Uncle Leong came……..”Doc,my son is not waking up after numerous plea.Apparently he fainted because of too much liquor,”he added. My immediate response was to ask Uncle Leong to pinch him or give him a slap on his face as a indicator to wake him up from slumberland. He hung up thereafter.
5 minutes later,Uncle Leong was on the phone again complaining that his son is not breathing anymore!I was stunned by this,I immediately summoned him to admit his son to the emergency room.Uncle Leong was shaking as he talked and further revealed that his son’s face had turned black! He hung up almost immediately after that.
Another minutes later,he rang again from the hospital stating that doctors are resuscitating him. This time, his voice was rather in a panicky as I sensed something is not right.I told him to be calm and further clarified to him that overdosage of alcohol is not always that catastrophic(only if the drinker is of normal BMI and relatively healthy),in his son’s case,it’s very obvious that he is more on the overweight side and subsequently if he has hypertension, the situation could be more critical. Then, out of the blue,Uncle Leong uttered…”I found 2 packets of ecstasy pills in his pocket”…………..
So sad… another young life snuffed out… Time for some music to ease the pain …
OK that’s it for this weeks rounding…
