Lift ban on Firecrackers?

The Star reports:

The Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) has urged the Government to lift the ban on the lighting of firecrackers during festive seasons.
Its vice-president K. Koris said this was because the authorities’ efforts to enforce the ban had failed miserably over the years.
“I know this is a sensitive issue since the ban was imposed for public safety.
“But there is a lack of enforcement which is making a mockery of the law. What is the solution?” he asked in an interview here yesterday.
He said people were still letting off firecrackers despite the Customs Department’s warning that those caught doing so during this Chinese New Year would be slapped with a minimum on-the-spot compound of RM100.

I was just remarking to Palmdoc how nice it was to such a quiet CNY this year. I don’t know about other areas but at least in SJ, I have hardly heard any firecrackers this year, apart from a brief burst at midnight on CNY Eve. Apart from that isn’t it just great not to read of any firecracker mishaps in the papers this year? Instead we read of the Customs and Police departments doing a stellar job in seizing illegal firecrackers. Their efforts was apparently helped by the recent floods in Johore. The ban is not so much about collecting taxes on firecrackers, but rather how dangerous they can be to public safety. Afterall this is what happened when the Chinese Government eased a decade-old ban on fireworks this year.
