Special Merdeka Palm Treo promotion for Malaysian doctors and medical students!!
posted in - Palmdoc, - Technology |Calling all Malaysian Doctors and Medical Students! Thinking of upgrading your mobile phone? You now have an opportunity to own a Palm powered smartphone, the Treo 680 which was just launched in Malaysia in January. The current RRP is RM 1888 but we have been talking with C2O (the local distributor for Treo) and in conjuction with a participating dealer, they are now giving a special 50th Merdeka Celebration offer solely for Malaysian medical doctors and students. This offer is time limited (closes Sep 20th) and is limited only to 50 units.
And now… drumroll…. the offer is:
A Treo 680 for RM1688
complete with foc
– 1 Car Charger
– 1 extra battery
– 1 screen protector
– 1 GB SD Card
Go here for more information on the Palm Treo 680 (the website lists the RRP as RM1988 but I think it’s outdated as you should be able to get the Treo 680 for RM 1888 but no freebies from the shops)
This special Merdeka offer is a RM200 discount from the RRP and if you include the freebies, it’s a real bargain. I have also offered to throw in a complimentary CDRom with Palm medical freeware and shareware programs to help you get started if you are new to PDAs. I have updated a list of Best Freeware Palm Medical software
to help you get started. A list from which you can easily download is better than burning on CDRom I thought – since some, e.g. Epocrates, require you to create a free account before you can use the software.
Disclosure: The Malaysian Medical Resources does not benefit financially in any way from this promotion.
Please note all warranty and support is from the local dealer and Palm Asia. The MMR is not involved in any after sales support – we are only here to help in the promotion (as Palm enthusiasts!) Palm support is legendary and I can certainly vouch for that as a Palm user for 10 years. You get a free 1:1 swop for a new unit if anything goes wrong the first 30 days after purchase from the local dealer. The warranty is 1 year with from Palm Asia (based in Singapore but there are drop off points in Malaysia) which provides exchange units and excellent phone and email support.

This is a an excellent deal people! The Palm Treo 680 is a great PDA phone for medical doctors and students – and I’m stating this as a Palm user for 10 years and am currently a Treo 680 user myself. It is easy to use, easy to maintain and there is a huge installation software base for you to choose from.
For starters, you may want to view some software suggestions:
Must-have PDA applications for doctors
The best Free medical PDA applications
Don’t forget the Palm Treo can do more than function as a phone and run medical software, it is a complete multimedia PDA which can play MP3s & videos/movies. Storage is great and supports up to 8 Gb SD cards. The Treo can connect wirelessly (via GPRS/Edge) for email and web browsing. It comes also with Documents2Go which is a Microsoft Office compatible suite which syncs nicely with your PC and can also read native Word, Excel and Powerpoint files. Docs2Go also reads native PDF documents. This means you can take your lecture notes, references and journal articles with you on the go to read whenever and wherever. The threaded Palm SMS program is legendary and once you’ve used it, in conjunction with the great QWERTY keyboard, you won’t ever go back to the cumbersome T9 text entry you see in Nokias! Palm OS PIM – Personal Information Manager for Calendar, Contact, Task and Memo data – is also in my opinion the best in it’s class. It beats Windows Mobile hands down for ease of use. Never be disorganised again! As an example of PIM use, here’s how I use Agendus to manage my patient contacts (video clip). Yes it really is. So far two respondents. Imiagine I paid RM 1950 for it myself (no freebies) when it was first launched here about 8 months ago. The price one pays for being an early adopter

just kidding lar. frankly after my TX problems i’ve basically given up on Palms. it’s been unreliable beyond words and i’ve gone back to using paper drugbooks. though perhaps this might entice me to re-try it. is this sim-locked?

You probably can get a much better deal in the US for a Cingular (ATT now I believe) branded Treo 680. If Cingular gives you good GSM coverage than you could give it a try. If it is an unlocked Cingular it can be used in Malaysia, even if it is locked you can unlock later (either contact Cingular or a third party unlocking company for a small fee)

Btw, there are a limited number of red colored units. However I must caution those who request them that there might be a longer turn around time in replacement (for the same colour) if there ever is a need to send back under warranty. Otherwise it’s pretty cool to be one of the few red Treo owners!

The Treo 680 runs on PalmOS Garnet. There are lots of Palm medical software, but you can run many of these on Windows Mobile PDAs if you use something called Styletap

Hi, Im do not want to be rude or anything, but if you want to buy treo 680, you can buy from Ebay. Seller from USA will ship worldwide and you can get as cheap as 190euro (I bought mine) including delivery to Dublin Ireland. you can get around 200euro(that less than RM1000) including delivery to Malaysia. Make some research for more details. Im a student as well, Malaysian student studying medicine in Dublin Ireland. In Europe and USA now, clinical student are recommended to have a PDA and some uni even give free PDAs for their student. So because of high demand, it become so cheap compared to Malaysia. PDA is very useful with appropriate software. Again, I don’t want to be rude or anything, but want to share my opinion with my fellow friends. I understand as a student, cheap is good, and it is worth it. Trust me.

If you are on a budget and can get it cheap second hand, then by all means. In fact my first Treo, a 650, was bought from Ebay Malaysia.
There are a couple of caveats though:
1) You must make sure it is an unlocked model which will work in Malaysia
2) Shipping from Ebay International, e.g. US can be horrendously expensive. Do take note of the shipping costs.
3) The warranty. Although Palm warranty is “international” you have to send back your set to the region where it was originally purchased. So unless you are willing to take the risk, warranty will be an issue.
