Homesick?
posted in - General, - Palmdoc |Well we are approaching the times of the year (Hari Raya, Christmas and CNY etc )when thoughts of home and family are uppermost in our minds.
I am not concerned about our doctors abroad – these veterans should be quite adjusted by now. It’s the medical students studying in far away lands who are most vulnerable to home-sickness and depression, especially as medicine is such a stressful course.
Chwee in the MMR Forums has already expressed her home sickness.
seowyen has shared this little Blog post I Will Bring You Home which shows even little things can help you carry on….
On our part, hopefully the MMR Forums will help alleviate homesickness and allow our medical students overseas get in touch with each other and with their colleagues at home
How can I hope to make you understand
Why I do what I do,
Why I must travel to a distant land,
Far from the home I love.
Once I was happily content to be
As I was, where I was,
Close to the people who are close to me,
Here in the home I love.

It helps a lot if you can find a “home away from home”. Blogged about this today but can’t do a trackback ping from Blogger.

Even the ‘veterans’ are also homesick. I remember how from Penang to KL, there were so much to miss, Hokkien mee and char kweow teoy were just not the same.
But the secret is to explore and enjoy the new environment, and I learned to enjoy the local food. In Melbourne, Vietnamese food and Hong Kong dim sum are better than what you get in Malaysia.
In UK, er…., I suppose curry karaoke. Haha.

yea, i agree. the veterans get homesick too. and i eas surprised when i left again this year, my 7th year leaving, that i had to force tears down at the airport.
the secret is to keep busy. and try to socialize, absorb all the different culture has to offer. dun just stick with malaysians.
man, when I heard Micheal Buble’s Home… that made me homesick.

Being in sydney for the last 10months has made my taste buds go blend ! I miss hawker style cooking esp the char kway teow and sup ayam/kambing. Coming back this years Deepavali will be “real food coming”.
