Unsafe hospital

QEH

We’ve blogged before about Sick Hospitals in this country. When roofs and ceilings leak or collapse, pipes leak etc. it exposes flaws in the system of handing out contracts, standards of workmanship and overall administrative (in)competence. But this takes the cake – the Sick Hospital which is now in ICU – i.e. the situation has gone critical. What has happened is this Sick hospital has become so unsafe that patients have to be evacuated. Malaysiakini reports

Several hundred patients of Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu are being transferred out after three blocks were declared unsafe by engineers.
Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai confirmed this late yesterday in a statement after weeks of uncertainty over the fate of the 27-year-old hospital.
The affected patients will be sent to Likas, Damai and the Sabah Medical Centre in Kota Kinabalu and two other hospitals in Keningau and Beaufort along the west coast.

Was this a sudden deterioration? No. Actually it seems the symptoms started 8 years ago but unfortunately it appears that the MOH and JKR haven’t done anything substantial to rectify the problems. It seems to me they are responsible for this fiasco.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that the QEH management had alerted the Health Ministry as early as 2000 about deteriorating conditions at the hospital. The problem initially started with falling concrete fragments in the wards and toilets. Although safety measures were taken by the management to reduce the problem of concrete fragmentation, the incidents continued with increasing frequency over the years.
The Health Ministry is supposed to monitor and carry out maintenance and repair works on the hospital from time to time through its concession company Syarikat Faber Mediserve and the JKR Sabah. It is not known whether such works were in fact carried out satisfactorily and on schedule. Liow said JKR Sabah conducted an inspection of the hospital in 2006 and last year but “could not ascertain the real status of the safety of the buildings concerned”.

I have only one word for all of this. Disgraceful!
