Singapore wants Singaporeans to send their Ah Kong and Ah Ma to JB

posted in - Humour, - Offbeat news, - Palmdoc |

The Singaporean Health Minister is suggesting that elderly Singaporeans could live in Nursing homes in JB. The rationale is that the cost of living in JB is cheaper and yet they are still close enough to return to Singapore for medical treatment should the need arise (via Dranony in the DObbs forums).

SINGAPOREANS could consider living in nursing homes in neighbouring Johor Baru, Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan suggested yesterday.
It would be cheaper, yet be near enough to Singapore for family members to visit and for residents to return for medical care if necessary, he said.
He told Parliament yesterday that he recently visited a site in Johor Baru where a Singaporean investor was planning to build a 200-bed nursing home.
He asked the investor about the costs involved, and was stunned at how low they were.
He said: ‘It is mind-boggling. The cost of land and construction cost is so low that my cost of putting up just a polyclinic (in Singapore) is probably more than his cost of putting up a 200-bed nursing home (in Johor Baru).

This has prompted someone to upload this ditty to Youtube

Now you know where Phua Choo Kang will stay in his retirement.

Malaysia can reciprocate by piping our sewage to Singapore.
After all, it would be raw material for Singapore to produce “Newater”.

“NEWater (Chinese: 新生水) is the brand name given to reclaimed water produced by Singapore’s Public Utilities Board. More specifically, it is treated wastewater (sewage) that has been purified using dual-membrane (via microfiltration and reverse osmosis) and ultraviolet technologies, in addition to conventional water treatment processes. The water is potable and is consumed by humans, but is mostly used for industry requiring high purity water.”

I note you categorise this post under ‘humour’ and perhaps it’s meant for a laugh. However I do not want your readers to get the wrong idea because the Sg HM is someone who honoured his parents more than any of you can imagine. He has done many great things to the healthcare of that nation including lead them out of the SARS crisis and deserves some respect.

What he put down was a suggestion, as part of the options that Singaporeans could consider. He did not ask them to send their parents away, which was how the media has twisted the message. Many people have their parents living not far from them yet only visit the old folks during Chinese New Years.

For the record the “Humour” is for the Youtube clip and the “Offbeat” is for the News.
