Don’t mix Clopidogrel with Omeprazole!
posted in - Jimbo, - Medical Updates |The FDA has issued a public health advisory warning patients and physicians that concomitant use of clopidogrel (Plavix) and omeprazole (Omez) blunts the antiplatelet effect of clopidogrel, thus increasing the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke.

Many patients who are on Clopidogrel are also on proton-pump-inhibitors on account of the gastritis symptoms produced by oral aspirin. The FDA recommended that H2-blockers or antacids be used instead in these patients.
There is also a long list of other medications which should not be mixed with Clopidogrel which includes:
1. esomeprazole (Nexium),
2. cimetidine (which is available by prescription as Tagamet and OTC as Tagamet HB),
3. fluconazole (Diflucan),
4. ketoconazole (Nizoral),
5. voriconazole (VFEND),
6. etravirine (Intelence),
7. felbamate (Felbatol),
8. fluoxetine (Prozac, Serafem, Symbyax),
9. fluvoxamine (Luvox), and
10. ticlopidine (Ticlid).
