Association Between Beta-Blockers, Other Antihypertensive Drugs and Psoriasis: Population-based Case-control Study

When I was a medical student, I was thought that beta blockers either precipitate or aggravates psoriasis. When I was a Masters student, I was told the same thing by a dermatologist. Now, I teach medical students the same thing. Looks like things have come full circle.

But now, a large case control analysis involving more than 36 thousand people in UK may just put this myth to rest.

You can read more about it here: Beta blockers and psoriasis, is there a link?

I shall no longer propagate this belief. 🙂

Arthritis Drugs Under Scrutiny, Heart Surgery Safer at Night, Red Wine May Slow Aging

Arthritis Drugs Under Scrutiny, Heart Surgery Safer at Night, Red Wine May Slow Aging

From Maryland – The FDA is studying four drugs used in the treatment of diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and Crohn’s Disease to determine if they may increase cancer risk in children. They received reports that those being treated with the drugs resulted in 30 cases of cancer over 10 years. The drugs decrease inflammation by inhibiting a protein called tumor necrosis factor.

From London – The National Confidential Enquiry Into Patient Outcome and Death is reporting that heart surgery is safest at night. The researchers found that day surgeries are more likely to be performed by a junior surgeon, while those at night are performed by senior physicians. In an investigation of 800 coronary bypass operations that resulted in death, nearly one in 10 were performed at night.

And finally, from Wisconsin – A new study from the University of Wisconsin-Madison suggests that resveratrol, a compound found in red wine, may slow the aging process and protect the heart. Resveratrol was added to the diets of middle-aged mice, and the results correlated with a previous study involving calorie restriction. Both studies decreased the decline of heart functionality, most often associated with the aging process.

Detox Diets and Procedures Generally Don’t Promote Health

So-called Detox Diets are a fad. However they don’t really do much good, and as this MedicalNewsToday article says, the Detox Diets and Procedures Generally Don’t Promote Health

The bottom line: If you’re healthy, concentrate on giving your body what it needs to maintain its self cleaning system a healthful diet, adequate fluids, exercise, sleep, and all recommended medical check ups, instead of relying on so called detox procedures, says the Harvard Women’s Health Watch

Recently I saw a woman who had psoriasis and in her quest to eliminate all the “poisonous” things in her diet, she became quite severely anaemic from nutritional deficiency!

Psoriasis Forum Malaysia

Dominic has written in the MMR Shoutbox to inform us of the new Psoriasis Forum Malaysia which aims to “bring psoriasis patients together to help one another through discussion”. This looks like a site which has great potential to function as a online patient support group.
My word of advice is that such forums need dedicated and vigilant moderation lest it falls prey to spammers and purveyors of dubious alternative medicines.
We’ve also added this forum to the MMR page of Support Group links
