How to Search for Doctors in Malaysia
Finding the right doctor in Malaysia is not done through a single directory. Patients need to use a stepwise approach using official registers and hospital sources.
This page explains how to do that correctly.
Step 1. Confirm the doctor is legally registered
Malaysian Medical Council (MMC)
The Malaysian Medical Council(MMC) maintains the official register of all licensed medical practitioners.
What MMC confirms
- Doctor’s full name
- MMC registration number
- Practising status
What MMC does not provide
- Clinic or hospital location
- Appointment booking
- Specialty details
Official MMC register

This step confirms the doctor is legally allowed to practise medicine in Malaysia
Step 2. Confirm specialist recognition (if applicable)
If you are looking for a specialist, you should verify specialist recognition separately.
National Specialist Register (NSR)
The National Specialist Register (NSR) is the official register of recognised medical specialists in Malaysia.
What NSR confirms
- Recognised specialty and subspecialty
- Specialist registration status
What NSR does not provide
- Clinic or hospital location
- Appointment details
- Availability or fees
- Coverage of general practitioners
Official NSR search
NSR should be used to verify credentials, not to find where a doctor practises.
Step 3. Find where the doctor practises
Once registration and specialist status are confirmed, use hospital or clinic sources
Private hospitals
Most specialists practise through private hospitals. Hospital websites usually list:
- Doctor name
- Specialty
- Clinic hours
- Contact details
This is the most practical way for patients to locate a specialist.
Public hospitals
- Specialists are usually accessed via referral
- Doctor names may not be fully listed online
- Teaching hospitals may publish consultant lists
Step 4. Use specialty organisations (optional)
Some medical specialties maintain member directories through professional bodies.
These directories may help identify specialists in specific fields but are:
- Not comprehensive
- Not designed for appointment booking
They should be used as a supplement, not a primary search tool.

Step 5. Online booking platforms (use with caution)
Commercial doctor platforms can help with convenience but are not complete directories.
Limitations include:
- Paid listings or promotion
- Incomplete coverage
- Voluntary participation by doctors
Presence on a platform does not imply endorsement or ranking.
What patients should avoid relying on alone
- Google reviews
- Social media popularity
- Marketing claims such as “top doctor”
- Influencer recommendations without credentials
These are not substitutes for proper verification.
